Fitchburg Yogi of the Month: Kelsey Keyes

How did you get started at Dfly?
I was starting to get bored with the same sequences of my own practice and thought it was time to learn some new styles and flows.

What was your yoga/barreamped experience before Dfly?
I have been practicing yoga off and on since I was in high school. Mentally, yoga has always been a tool that I’ve relied on when I needed a distraction or insight on an issue.

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
All the teachers cue differently and put value on different transitions; they could all teach the same flow and it would feel completely different and engaging.

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
I have a very physical job working with dogs (which I only have gratitude for), but it has definitely taken its toll on my back. Going to class makes my body move better and feel stronger; also it help me to move my body smarter and more mindfully outside of practice.

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class? Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
My goal is to go twice a week. I love power flow and flow/yin and I love to go back to aroma yin when that class opens up again. Outside of yoga, I spend most of my free time with my family- 3 little boys (7, 5 and 3), husband and 3 dogs- drawing and golfing.

Instructor Jill Merfeld: “Kelsey brings such a calming energy to the classes she attends. She loves to arrive early and it always makes me smile to see her soaking up the warmth in the room while I set up. It’s even more fun to watch her practice! Thank you for sharing your energy with me and the other Dragonfly yogis!”

How did you get started at Dfly?
In the Fall of 2019, I had a friend who really enjoyed Dragonfly and would always try to convince me to attend classes with her, finally, I said yes and we attend a 60 minute Yoga Flow class. I knew that DragonFly was for me when one, I had an incredible experience, but two, the scented towel!! WOW! I knew I had to stay.

What was your yoga/BarreAmped experience before Dfly?
Little to none! A few free classes here and there, and I attending group led classes by RecWell through UW-Madison!

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
I really enjoy how it makes me feel and I find the environment of Dragonfly really comfortable. I enjoy that there is a lounge available with tea, the hair ties in the bathroom, the shampoo and conditioner available in the shower! But most of all, I love the feeling of doing a really hard yoga class and getting the cool jasmine or eucalyptus scented towel! I am not the best at yoga to be completely honest, but Dragonfly has made me fall in love with the practice, and I’m even interested in becoming a yoga instructor someday!

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
Most definitely! I did yoga in Fall 2019-March 2020 and towards the end of my time in March I felt more in control of my emotions and mental health and I felt incredibly strong and capable. While it is now Fall 2021, I have been doing classes consistently again for three weeks now and just the difference in my overall strength and happiness is incredible!

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
I attend a class almost every day of the week! Usually, at the very least I will go to 5 classes a week. My favorite class is Yoga Up 45, though it really does kick my butt!

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
Since joining Dragonfly I have seen the importance of yoga and I see it as my form of self-care. This past year I spent traveling through Ecuador, Chile, and Mexico, and in every country, I went to, you can guarantee I was bringing my yoga mat on the plane with me! My yoga mat has been with me everywhere now, and I am so glad to have been introduced to yoga!

Sun Prairie Yogi of the Month: Kay Arnold

How did you get started at Dfly?
I decided to try Dfly on a recommendation from a friend at work. She assured me that Dfly is a very friendly and un-intimidating community so I decided to give it try. Besides, the ‘hot” part really intrigued me. I went first as a guest with my friend, then I signed up for the introductory offer. I tried several different classes, but fell in love with Flow, Slow Flow, and Yin. The yoga teachers were very responsive to my needs, always willing to help with any questions I had. After the first month, I knew I found what I was looking for, so I became a member. That was three years ago!

What is/was your yoga/BarreAmped experience before Dfly?
Before Dfly, I had very little yoga experience. I did take a few classes at YMCA, and went along with family and friends to their classes, but I wasn’t drawn to it. I wasn’t convinced that Yoga would give me what I thought I needed.

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
Besides the classes, the most surprising and enjoyable part of attending Dfly is meeting so many nice people, who I now call my friends. I look forward to seeing them at class, and sometimes they are the motivation I need to roll out my mat. The staff at Dfly are so inviting and friendly, too. And I do love the HOT of Dfly!

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
I started yoga mostly to improve my balance and flexibility. But, I soon found that yoga truly is a full body/mind “work-out” that builds strength, endurance and mobility, as well as cardio. I am definitely stronger, especially in my core. I am able to bend, kneel, and reach so much more flexibly. Because of these gains, I feel so much more confident to do physical activities and attempt those yoga poses I would have never thought I could at the beginning of my yoga journey. All those little aches and pain and stiffness disappears, too. But most importantly, consistent yoga practice helps me feel happy and more focused which helps me to be present and mindful. Life, and all its complexities, seems just a little easier to deal with when there is yoga in my life.

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
I usually attend 3-4 classes per week. I can’t pick a favorite because every class brings something different and new to my practice. The teachers keep the classes interesting and provide me the opportunity to challenge myself.

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
I do so appreciate Dfly – Sun Prairie’s staff for creating a safe and fun environment in which I am able to push myself to try new poses and continue to “strive for progress, not perfection”.

Middleton Yogi of the Month: Amie Zellner

How did you get started at Dfly?
I got started at Dragonfly years ago (don’t remember when) then stopped for a bit then restarted in Jan of 2020. I did the online classes much of COVID.

What is/was your yoga/barreamped experience before Dfly? What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
I have attended some other yoga classes in Waunakee before Dragonfly. I really enjoy the instructors at Dragonfly. I also love the “hot” and the ability to challenge myself, or not. The classes offer nice modifications. I feel very comfortable as there are all different people and ability levels in the classes. It is an opportunity to just focus on myself for that time. The cool towels at the end are the best reward!

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
I feel the classes have helped me focus on myself and my health. I have noticed and increase in strength, balance, focus and wellbeing. Classes have become a priority for me. I feel overall better when I attend. I try to attend classes at least 5 times/ week. My favorite classes are the flow classes, but I do love the aromatherapy yin too!

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
In the fall I will be going back to teaching 1st grade, so no more 9 am classes, but I will try to go to evening classes as much as possible (weekends too!). I will still keep yoga a priority, as I feel better for it. I enjoy coming to Dragonfly as much as possible. It is an easy and quick transit from Waunakee, where I live. My daughter, future son-in law, and future daughter in law are all members too and love it. I am working on my son and others to join. I know they will love it too!

Instructor Anna Lindstrom: “Amie is like a ray of sunshine every time she comes into the studio. Her spirit for learning and growth is evident in her practice… and she always does it with a smile. She radiates positivity and kindness. I will miss her on Thursday mornings when she returns this fall to her very important work of teaching our young people. (Lucky kids!)”

How did you get started at Dfly?
I started at Dragonfly on the urging of my daughter after she had attended a hot yoga class. She took me to a flow in the mild room at Middleton. Although at the time I would have told you it was the hot room. Then during my trial period, I took as many different types of classes as possible that would fit into my schedule that month and enjoyed them all. I became a member and started my yoga journey.

What was your yoga/barreamped experience before Dfly? What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
Many years before I came to Dragonfly, I tried a few yoga classes offered through the daycare my children attended. The classes were an activity but didn’t have an impact on my lifestyle. The Dfly community is such a supportive group of people. I enjoy the welcoming environment and positive energy in every class.

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?/ How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
I call Dragonfly my “happy place”. I look forward to the 45 or 60 minutes I’ve set aside to focus on me, whether it is a personal fitness goal I’m trying to reach in a Yoga Up / Power Up class or time to focus on breathing and movement in a yoga class. I come out of every class feeling de-stressed and accomplished. I attend four to five classes a week mostly at the Fitchburg location. I really can’t pick a favorite class, which is a great part of Dfly. I enjoy the variety, but if I had to choose currently, core flow, Yoga Up and Power Up would be at the top of my list. However, if you asked me on a different day my favorite classes might be Barre, power flow, and aroma yin.

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
I found that the temperature of the class really helps me focus on being present, making it much easier to block out all other distractions. Over the past year, with the unpredictable way life has been changing, Dragonfly classes were a constant, even if it was outside in the studio parking lot, online or masked up in the studio. I am grateful to be part of this community.

Instructor Tiffany Geier: “Amy is the perfect choice for Fitchburg’s YOM! She is a dedicated and inspirational member as she does the work with strength, focus and grace. Amy takes many of our UP classes at Dragonfly, but she balances out her experience and practice by sprinkling in flows and yins. Amy leads and motivates those around her, and I especially enjoy seeing Amy practice next to and with her daughter! I absolutely love having Amy in class, as she continues to teach me the meaning of commitment and compassion. Congrats Amy!!”

Downtown Yogi of the Month: Caroline Sullivan

How did you get started at Dfly?
I wish I knew the exact answer as to how I got started at Dragonfly, but I think I was at a standstill with my fitness routine and wanted a space and place that would be consistent for me so I tried some classes at Dfly and never looked back!

What was your yoga/BarreAmped experience before Dfly?
I did a fair amount of barre but only dabbled in yoga and never did hot yoga. Regular yoga never did it for me; I found myself letting my mind wander and not getting the benefits of a yoga practice. It wasn’t until I went to a HOT yoga class that I realized how much I loved that style of yoga practice.

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
I enjoy the ability to attend many different kinds of classes throughout the week that fit in with my schedule the way I want them to. Also, I love that so many of the teachers have such different styles of teaching but they all make their class welcoming and encouraging.

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
There have been so many times where I go to class and it takes every fiber of my being to get there because I’m not in a good mental place for whatever reason. Every single time I’m done with class when I feel like that, I am in such a new and rejuvenated mental place — it’s incredible!

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
I attend classes about five to six times a week. I’m not just saying this, but I love all types of the classes, but I’ve especially started to appreciate the Flow and Yin classes because I like the ability to get a quick flow in and then deepen my stretching.

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
I am so thankful for this community! COVID really took a hit to my mental state and having livestream classes as resources were great, and the feeling I got when I walked back into the studio after studios reopened is happiness I can’t really describe. Thankful for my DFly community!

Fitchburg Yogi of the Month: Lacey Wood

How did you get started at Dfly?
I had a friend who attended hot yoga classes and convinced me to try it a couple years ago. It took a lot of convincing to start attending classes. I thought, “you mean you go to yoga classes in 95-degree temps?!” But I got hooked immediately!

What is/was your yoga/barreamped experience before Dfly?
Very little experience before I came to Dfly. I had attended a few classes here and there at other studios and never really cared for yoga until I found Dfly.

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
I love that the fitness-based classes are all different. Each instructor has their own style, it keeps me on my toes & I keep pushing myself to be better than I was the day before. While being in a hot room doing cardio or lifting weights for an hour can feel intense, the benefits are worth it.

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
YES! I broke my hip in 2018 from a running injury and all the balance poses & unilateral exercises have helped to strengthen my hip flexors. As a long-time runner, strength often took a back seat to miles. Power up & Yoga up is the best of both worlds—a serious cardio workout combined with body-strength exercises that have vastly improved my overall fitness and helped me overcome overuse injuries, so I’m running happily and pain free now. 6-7 days a week. My favorite classes are yoga up and power up classes. I love a good challenge and those classes never disappoint.

Instructor Shawn Smith: “Lacey is consistent and dedicated to her fitness routine. She is ready to get after it every time she’s in one of my fitness classes. Totally determined and ready to work hard.”

Downtown Yogi of the Month: Ava Shadmani

How did you get started at Dfly?
I was introduced to Dfly through a friend in the winter of 2019. I was hooked after my first class and started my intro month right away!

What is/was your yoga/BarreAmped experience before Dfly?
I used to do some yoga occasionally but had never done hot yoga before Dfly. It was pretty a new experience!

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
I love EVERYTHING about Dfly. From its wonderful instructors to a positive environment and friendly community. Doing yoga at Dfly is where I get to stay mindful and present in my daily life. It is also an effective workout. I should add the chill towel at the end of class is pretty awesome!

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
Hot Yoga has enhanced my life mentally and physically. As a violinist, I notice practicing yoga improves my playing by releasing tension from my body. Long hours of holding up my instrument are way more tolerable and less painful with yoga! I also love sweating things out. Overall, I feel more grounded and at ease since taking classes.

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
I go to Dfly studio 3 to 4 times a week. It’s hard to choose a favorite class since each instructor has something unique to offer. I personally enjoy classes led by John Harmon the most. Chakra Flow is a favorite too!

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
I am moving to Canada in a month and the first thing I will do there, is finding the closest Yoga studio to my house. Thank you Dfly for turning yoga into a passion in me and giving me joy and harmony during my time in Madison!

Sun Prairie Yogi of the Month: Connor Morovits

How did you get started at Dfly?
I got started at Dragonfly last year pre-covid and really started to see some amazing benefits in my physical health, but also my overall health as well. Then covid hit, and I was in the best shape of my life, and unfortunately I lost everything I worked towards last April-August. I signed back up this year and I am slowly but surely getting back to where I want to be!

What is/was your yoga experience before Dfly?
I had absolutely no experience before signing up to Dragonfly. My wife and I went on a trip to Phoenix and decided to do a free class at Radi8 Hot Yoga down there and we really enjoyed it, so immediately when we got back to Wisconsin I was eager to sign up.

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
Getting a good sweat in. I love to work-out, but I am definitely not the type of person who can go to the gym, have stuff written down to do, and then perform those workouts. I need someone to tell me what to do when I workout and then I am good to go. I love how welcoming Dragonfly is too!
