How did you get started at Dfly?
I started going to Dfly when I was 16 with my mom. At first, I took the Hot 60/75/90 classes, but over time my practice evolved into more strength- and cardio-based classes, especially Power Up.
What was your yoga/barre experience before Dfly?
Dfly was actually my very first yoga and barre experience! I fell in love with it immediately, although the heat definitely took some adjusting to at first. I tried a few drop-in classes at other local studios, but nothing compared to Dfly.
What do you enjoy most about attending Dfly classes?
It’s truly a tie between the physical and mental benefits I feel after every class and the community at Dfly. I love seeing how much I can push my body, even when things feel hard, and proving to myself that I can do hard things. I absolutely LOVE the heat (even though I hated it at first) and the burn and endorphins I get after class.
At the same time, the Dfly community is completely unmatched. After attending for several years, I’ve built real connections with instructors and fellow yogis. It feels so good to walk into a class where you feel comfortable, supported, and surrounded by people who share the same values and love for movement.
Have you experienced any changes in your overall well-being since taking classes?
One million percent! I have never felt as strong as I do right now. Over the years, Dfly – especially the Power Up classes – has helped me build strength in ways that still amaze me. For perspective, I used to never grab weights over 5 lbs, and now I’m lifting 20s and 25s! Beyond the physical changes, I feel more confident in my body and mentally stronger, knowing I’ve proven to myself that I can persevere and push through challenges.
How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
My very first Power Up class, I actually had to leave early because I felt like I was going to pass out – now I attend almost every day and sometimes even take two classes in one day if I have the time! It’s crazy to think about how much my journey has progressed. My day genuinely feels incomplete if I don’t get a good sweat in.
Power Up is definitely my favorite, especially with instructors I know will kick my butt (cough cough, Lauren C). I also love Yoga Up, Circuit Up, and barre classes. One goal I have this year is to add more flow classes to balance out all the strength and cardio.
Any additional thoughts about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life?
I’ve been active for as long as I can remember – I started working out when I was really young, probably around 10 years old. Movement has always been part of who I am and I’ve always loved the mental and physical benefits that come from a good workout. I’m also a runner and love the feeling after a long, hard run. That said, there is truly nothing like working out in a community that is positive, welcoming, encouraging, and constantly pushes you to be your best self while delivering real results. I am so grateful my mom made me attend a Dfly class with her when I was in high school, because I’m not sure I would have found it otherwise. I never imagined group fitness would become such a big part of my life but now I truly can’t imagine my life without it.
Instructor Carly S.: “Makayla is a joy to have in classes. She prioritizes her well-being by showing up for herself with intention, strength, kindness and consistency. We’re so glad you’re a part of this community, Makayla. Congratulations!”
