Middleton Yogi of the Month: Jennifer Weisensel

I got started at Dfly around January of 2017 when my friend Gretchen had started attending and she talked me in to joining her for a Flow class. I wasn’t very excited to go and I had absolutely no intention of becoming a yogi. I had done yoga only a handful of times before I entered Dfly and knew little to nothing about the practice. I made it through my first class by attempting to copy what everyone around me was doing. I was surprised at how mentally and physically challenging I found the hour to be and it really wasn’t at all what I had expected. The hot room, savasana, the scented towel at the end of class and the challenge of trying to figure this whole thing out brought me back for another class and soon after that I became a member.

I enjoy so many things about attending Dfly classes: the heat of the studio and sense of peace it offers, the music, the use of essential oils, the inspirational quotes and stories teachers incorporate into class, and especially the knowledge, variety and expertise each of the different instructors brings.

I’ve experienced so many positive changes since I started practicing yoga. I’ve always loved working out and the challenge that sports and physical activities offer, however over the years I’ve done a lot of damage to my body. Once I started practicing yoga, and doing less of other workouts, my body has felt less pain and more balanced. The back pain I’ve experienced for years has disappeared.

Being a teacher and mother of two boys, who are finally old enough to stay home alone, I’m fortunate to have extra time in the summer to attend class almost every day. It’s a great opportunity to try out different classes and instructors. During the school year I try my best to get to class four or more times per week. It’s a challenge juggling work, kid schedules, and everything else but yoga has helped me to make showing up on my mat and doing something for myself a priority. My favorite parts of Dfly are the Flow classes. I can’t pick a favorite instructor because they are all so great. I appreciate how each instructor is different and I take something new and useful away from each of them, whether it is an inspirational message or just the right direction on figuring out how to do something new or try something a different way.

The two plus years I’ve been practicing yoga I have learned so much, but I feel like I’m just getting started. I love that there is always something new to learn and so many ways to modify each pose for whatever your level of fitness is or how you’re feeling that day. I’m about to turn 46 years old and I’m so excited to have found something new in my life that challenges me both physically and mentally and keeps me feeling young and healthy. I think the practice of yoga offers amazing personal challenges, inspires finding peace within you and encourages focus and dedication. I’m grateful to Dfly for giving me that and my friend Gretchen for dragging me to my first class.

Instructor Bekah Gant: “When Jennifer is on her mat, she challenges herself and inspires those around her. Her focus is solely on her own practice and how she can fully inhabit each pose. Thank you for the inspiration Jennifer, and congrats!”
