Fitchburg Yogi of the Month: Jeff Foster

Before starting at Dragonfly, I often had problems with my back. I tried physical therapy and chiropractors with limited success. While at PT, my therapist suggested I try yoga to improve my flexibility. So, I eventually decided to give yoga and Dragonfly a try. I was kind of nervous about trying something so new, but the staff and teachers were very welcoming when I started.

After trying a couple of classes, I was hooked. Quickly I was able to do pretty much anything without having back pain later on. That was over three years ago and I have not had problems with my back since. Before starting my yoga practice, things like playing volleyball or playing ball with my son could give me back problems. Now I can do those activities and more without thinking twice. I’m very happy I took the plunge and gave Dragonfly a try.

I enjoy the welcoming atmosphere. Every teacher I’ve taken a class with over the last few years has been welcoming and offer their own unique challenges. Getting a good workout gives me energy for the rest of the day. I think it’s also given me more patience; I don’t get discouraged if I can’t do a pose perfectly the first time.

I have improved my flexibility, which was my initial goal when I joined Dragonfly. It’s also helped with my overall strength. In the warm weather months, I spend more time doing outdoor things like running or biking, so I attend probably two times per week. In the colder months, I make it more frequently. My favorite classes are the Flow and Slow Flow classes. I enjoy Kelly’s Sunday morning Slow Flow class. It’s a good way to get the day off to a great start.

I was unsure if I would like hot yoga or even yoga in general. Now I enjoy the heat and the challenges that each class brings. I’m very happy I gave Dragonfly a try!

Instructor Kelly Perna: “Jeff’s commitment to his practice is clear and inspiring. Rain or shine I can expect to see him every Sunday morning in Fitchburg. He practices with thoughtful focus but resists taking himself too seriously. Thank you, Jeff, for sharing your practice with me. Keep up the great work!”
