Downtown Yogi of the Month: Dominic DiMarco

How did you get started at Dfly?
When I first started visiting Dfly I had a membership at another gym/studio in the downtown area and was seeking for some variety in classes and schedules. I started with a punchcard for occasional visits then over time I visited DFly more regularly. Due to superior instructors and facilities DFly has been my primary studio for the last 2 years.

What is/was your yoga experience before Dfly?
I started practicing yoga about 5 years ago when I moved back from Boulder, Colorado. In Colorado I hiked in the mountains for exercise and a mental reset several days a week. When I moved back the gym I joined offered me a ‘deal’. For an extra few dollars a month I could attend any of their classes, yoga included. The first day I went to the gym, second day went to yoga. Haven’t been back to a traditional gym since.

What do you enjoy most from attending Dfly classes?
I throughly enjoy how yoga spans strength, balance and flexibility across both the body and mind. Yoga clears my head regardless of the type of day I’ve had. Leaving yoga I feel refreshed, clear headed and ready for whatever life throws at me next.

Have you experienced any changes in your total well-being since taking classes?
Exercise in various forms has been a part of my entire life. That said, yoga more so than any other form serves to be a mental reset, not simply a way to dissipate physical manifestations of stress. If it’s been more than a few days since I’ve been to the studio or work/life are especially stressful my body will begin telling me to get exercise, to stretch, to reset. So I guess in the respect of my training my body to recognize stress and acknowledge the signals I’m receiving, yoga has contributed significantly to my overall well-being and state of mind.

How often do you attend classes? Favorite class?
In a perfect world, when I’m not traveling or have other schedule conflicts I like to get my stretch on 5+ days per week. My favorite classes are the ones that combine the mental and physical in a way that accentuates both. Giving the mind something to deep to ponder while the body is aching through a long hold, on the flip side the body’s exertion suppresses the subconscious mind’s constant chatter enabling greater mental clarity.

I’m not going to name favorites, but they know who they are.

Please feel free to share any other thoughts you have about Dfly, hot yoga, or your life as we would love to know more about you.
During my travels I’ve made it a priority to practice yoga around the country and world.

I’ve been to my favorite studio on 3 separate trips (sorry DFly, you’re #2), Ram Yoga House in Dharamshala, India. Yoga is from Northern India where it has been practiced for over 5,000 of years. There you’ll find Ravi, an approachable, patient master practitioner. Dharamshala has one particularly notable resident, the Dalai Lama. Ram Yoga House overlooks the Dalai Lama’s private residence on the next hilltop over. It’s a very special place in the world, tucked into the base of the Himalaya mountains with the plains of India stretching out before you. An amazing opportunity to fully decompress through yoga and meditation.
