Fitchburg Yogi of the Month: Nichole Wood

Dragonfly: You've been to over 100 classes at Dragonfly.  That's amazing.  Did you do yoga regularly before coming to Dragonfly?

Nichole Wood: I did prenatal yoga in 2000/2001 when I was pregnant with my first of 3 children.  I always missed it and a few years ago a friend gave me a video and mat as a gift.  I enjoyed this but it really was not the same as being a part of a class and community.  I would drive by Dragonfly and often thought about checking it out.  Eventually, I got the courage to try a 2 week trial.  Immediately, I fell in love and knew I had to make it part of my life style.

Dfly: You are a true Dragonflyer in the sense that you really take advantage of all of our different classes! Do you have a favorite class and if so, what makes it your favorite?

NW: I have many favorite classes.  I choose them based on my mood and how the class fits into my schedule.  I always love Fire.  A new favorite is Flash Fire.  I like Flow when I'm in the mood to work on inversions and arm balances.  Yin is great when I'm tired from more intense classes and need to really stretch out my muscles.  I especially like guided meditation at the end of Natalie's Yin.  Dragonfly has so many talented teachers.  I have learned so much from them.

Dfly: So many people that come to Dragonfly are brand-new to yoga.  What advice would you give someone taking their first class or someone who is nervous to try hot yoga for the first time?

NW: For me, walking through the door for the first time was the hardest part.  Once I was at Dragonfly, the atmosphere and people put me at ease.  It really is a place that accepts everybody at every level and I could feel it.

Dfly: What changes have you noticed (physically and/or mentally) since starting a regular yoga practice?  What benefits do you get from your practice?

NW: The benefits I feel from Yoga are many!  I use to run and I would find myself getting injured or sick just as I was starting to get in shape.  Once I felt better, I would have to start all over again.  This was very frustrating.  With Yoga, I have not been injured.  When I get sick, I feel like I can just pick up where once I get better.  Emotionally, I am so much more grounded.  I have learned to be more compassionate and forgiving, even towards myself.  I am better able to handle stress and am more fun to be around.

Dfly: What do you like about Dragonfly and what keeps you motivated to keep coming back?

NW: I love Dragonfly.  I love walking in and seeing all the friendly faces with their cheerful “hellos”.  I love the teachers and their words of wisdom.  I love the flexibility of having two studios with so many GREAT classes to choose from.  I'm so happy I walked through those doors for the first time.  Yoga and Dragonfly have changed my life for the better!
